"Social Distancing" delves into the psychological and physical ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic on our lives. The piece comprises two wheelchairs with sleek stainless steel frames, and suspended in the airspace between them are two spheres. This interactive installation encourages observers to manipulate the chairs, adjusting their proximity to each other, thus fostering a profound interaction.
As the chairs draw nearer, the large tennis ball spheres collide and sway, portraying the concept of physical closeness. Conversely, as the chairs move apart, the lighting dims, symbolizing the substitution of physical touch with symbolic communication.
The artwork vividly captures the present reality of social distancing as a consequence of the pandemic, while also embracing the aspiration that we will eventually gather devoid of fear or unease. By prompting contemplation on the notion of preserving social distance, the artwork acknowledges that despite separation, connections persist and can be profoundly experienced. Through its interactive essence, this creation prompts viewers to introspect on their personal journey through this phase of solitude, and how, even in moments of detachment—be they actual or symbolic—it is possible to bridge divides and find meaningful connectedness.
